Sustainability vs Longevity: The Conversation Fashion Needs to Have
In recent years, the fashion industry has seen a huge shift towards sustainability — and rightly so. As consumers become more conscious about where their clothing comes from, how it’s made, and what impact it has on the planet, brands are being challenged to think differently.
But within activewear especially, sustainability isn’t always as simple as “plastic free” versus “not plastic free.”
At Wild Spirit Sportswear, we believe the conversation needs to go deeper than buzzwords.
Because when it comes to creating clothing designed for movement, adventure, strength and everyday life, longevity matters too.
The Rise of Sustainable Fabrics
More brands are now introducing fabrics such as organic cotton, recycled polyester and TENCEL™ into their collections — and this is a positive step forward.
TENCEL™, for example, is known for its soft feel, breathability and lower environmental impact compared to some traditional fibres. Organic cotton reduces the use of harmful pesticides and supports more responsible farming practices. Recycled polyester helps repurpose existing plastic waste rather than creating new virgin materials.
But if you’ve noticed that many “sustainable” activewear brands still include recycled polyester or elastane blends, there’s a reason.
Performance wear has to perform.
It needs to:
- move with the body,
- withstand repeated washing,
- maintain shape,
- support sweat management,
- and survive real life.
For leggings, sports bras and technical performance pieces, fully natural fibres alone often don’t yet provide the durability, stretch and resilience many women need and expect.
The Sustainability Trade-Off Nobody Talks About
One of the biggest sustainability conversations often overlooked is longevity.
A garment made from purely natural fibres may sound environmentally perfect on paper — but if it loses shape quickly, wears out after a few months or ends up unworn at the back of a wardrobe, is it truly more sustainable?
We don’t believe sustainability should only be measured by the fabric label.
We believe it should also be measured by:
- how often a garment is worn,
- how long it lasts,
- how versatile it is,
- and whether it genuinely earns its place in your wardrobe.
At Wild Spirit, we’d rather create pieces that women reach for again and again — garments that support movement, confidence, comfort and adventure for years rather than seasons.
Real Life Wear Matters
As a fitness professional who has worked with women for over eight years, I know activewear isn’t just worn for one-hour gym sessions.
It’s worn:
- on school runs,
- dog walks,
- hikes,
- coffee catch-ups,
- strength sessions,
- chaotic life admin days,
- and the moments women carve out for themselves in between everything else.
That means clothing needs to feel good, wash well and keep up with real life.
This is why every Wild Spirit piece is tried and tested before it makes the final cut.
Not because perfection exists — but because thoughtful design matters.
Progress Over Perfection
We don’t claim to be a completely plastic-free brand.
And honestly? Few performance brands truly can be right now without compromising functionality, comfort or longevity somewhere along the line.
What we can promise is this:
- we consciously choose fabrics where possible,
- we continue exploring more responsible materials,
- we prioritise quality and longevity,
- and we create garments designed to be lived in — not simply consumed.
Because sustainability isn’t just about buying differently.
Sometimes it’s about buying less, choosing better and wearing longer.
The Wild Spirit Way
Wild Spirit was built around freedom, movement, escapism and strength.
We believe clothing should empower women to live boldly — whether that’s climbing mountains, walking the dog, training hard, starting over, or simply finding a moment to breathe in a busy world.
And part of living boldly is making more thoughtful choices too.
Not perfect choices.
Not performative choices.
Just better ones where we can.
Because sustainability and longevity don’t have to compete.
The future of fashion probably lies somewhere in the middle — where conscious materials meet real-world durability, and where garments are made to last beyond trends, seasons and throwaway culture.
